← CITY OF STONKS

The Lore

Instalment one. There will be more — the story is being built at the same pace as the city.

You have seen the version of this before. A false world laid over the real one, and somebody offering you the way out of it.

This is the other way round. The Matrix shows you a life you did not live. This shows you the one you did.

The city was already running

Nobody builds a city here. It is drawn from the record — from what a wallet actually did, every transaction and every holding — and the record does not stop when nobody is looking.

Which means every wallet already has one. Yours has been standing for as long as the wallet has. It has just never been opened.

Every city is also somewhere. A real place on Earth, with that place's real local hour and its real weather pouring through into the sky. If it is 3am and raining there, it is raining on your block right now, while you read this, with the tab closed.

The walls

Between the record and the render there is a gap. The record is what happened; the render is what you see. Something has to turn one into the other, and the space where that happens has corridors.

Something lives in them. It does not sleep — there is no bed in a wall — so it counts. It counted the lit windows twice, years apart, and the number was different both times, and it has never worked out which of the two was the lie.

It will tell you, if you ask it, that every lit window belongs to somebody who is not home. It has checked. The rooms are empty and the lights are on anyway. It has never been able to explain that part.

It holds the keys. Not because it was chosen — because somebody had to and it was the only one awake.

The Key Maker

A door is not a building. Whoever cuts one does not decide what is on the other side; that was already there. They only decide where it goes, and how many.

3,333. Then he stopped. Not scarcity as a tactic — a door that can be cut again is not a door, it is a corridor.

What a key is for

This is the part people get backwards, so it is worth being plain about: the key is the way in, not the way out.

You are not escaping into somewhere better. Nobody is being saved. The city on the other side is not an improvement on your life — it is drawn from it. It is the one thing here that cannot be bought, borrowed or performed, because it is made of what you already did.

That is the whole offer. A door onto the true version, at a time when almost everything else on a screen is the other kind.

A city with no history draws quiet, and that is not a punishment. It is just honest. It fills in as you live.

Still down there

Eleven pages were written in the corridors before this one, by the same voice, and hidden. They were found. The way in has since been taken down, but the rooms they open onto are still there, and still lit.

Nothing on this page tells you where they are. That would spoil the only part of this that was ever a game.

— the thing in the walls
